Biography
Marian Nelson Meeks (1922–2009) was born and raised in San Marcos, Texas. As the daughter of Mr. H.A. Nelson, professor and chair of the university's agriculture department (1909–1945), Meeks attended the campus laboratory school and then Southwest Texas State Teachers College. After graduating from college at the age of eighteen, Meeks began her first teaching job in Moulton, Texas. She taught for one year before receiving a scholarship to attend graduate school at The University of Texas at Austin. After receiving her MA in nutrition, Meeks worked at assorted hospitals in Chicago and St. Louis before being assigned to McCloskey VA Hospital in Temple, Texas, where she met her future husband, Reuben. Together, they moved to Houston where they lived for sixteen years before permanently returning to San Marcos.

Marian Meeks talks about the life of her father, H.A. Nelson, who taught agriculture at the university for many years. She describes her own experiences attending Southwest Texas State Teachers college in the 1930s and 1940s. She discusses aspects of campus life including literary societies, athletics, recitals, the Faculty Club, Aquarena Springs, and she shares stories about campus figures such as Mary Brogdon. Meeks recalls her early teaching experiences in Moulton, her graduate studies at The University of Texas at Austin, work in VA hospitals, and how she returned to San Marcos.
