Biography

A 1973 journalism graduate, Bill Cunningham (1949-2018) was the first SWT student to be elected to the San Marcos City Council. Mr. Cunningham was a public relations consultant in San Marcos, Texas, was a former chairman of the Texas State University System Board of Regents, and served as chair of the Texas State LBJ Birthday Centennial Steering Committee’s Community Subcommittee.

Bill Cunningham begins his interview by talking about the history of the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) and the Pedernales Electric Cooperative (PEC). He then talks about his father, who was the South Texas editor of the San Antonio Express, and about Lyndon Johnson. Cunningham also discusses his time working on the University Star, covering stories about the antiwar protests and the President McCrocklin issue, before reminiscing about his relationship with U.S. Representative J.J. "Jake" Pickle and telling stories about Texas politics.
