Ofelia Vasquez-Philo

Biography

Ofelia Vasquez-Philo (1932-2017) was born in Seguin, Texas in 1932. She earned her BA from Antioch University in 1979. Vasquez-Philo has been a prominent figure in the San Marcos community for decades. Along with serving as the director of Community Action, Inc., Vasquez-Philo founded the Centro Cultural Hispano de San Marcos community center. Vasquez-Philo, an active promoter of Hispanic heritage in Hays County, was the first Hispanic to serve on the San Marcos School Board. The Hays County Historical Commission recently created a video about Vasquez-Philo and her life.

At the time of her interview (October 1986), Vasquez-Philo listed her name as Vasquez.

Vasquez-Philo talks about the founding of Community Action, Inc. in 1965, and some of the programs they offer, such as Legal Aid and the Free Doctor's Care program, which help low-income residents of Central Texas.

LBJ100 Oral History Project

Vasquez-Philo talks about her interest in education, the differences in the San Marcos public schools - South Side for Hispanic children, Dunbar for Black children, and the Anglo school on the SWT campus - and the reasons she ran for the school board in 1969.  She talks in detail about how LBJs programs impacted the local Hispanic community, providing a rich source of information about San Marcos history before and after implementation of Great Society legislation.
