Theresa Shipp Schwartz

Biography

Theresa Shipp Schwartz is a 1972 Journalism graduate of Texas State University and former Pedagog yearbook editor.  Mrs. Schwartz was a member of the Student Senate, the legislative branch of Associated Student Government, when former President Johnson paid a visit and offered political advice to the young student senators.  Later, she was working at the local radio station, KCNY, when Mr. Johnson died.

Note: Pat Murdock and Gayle Granberry also join in the conversation.

LBJ100 Oral History Project

One of the first issues Theresa Schwartz mentions is how, as editor of the Pedagog, she was involved in changing two student awards to be more equitable.  The Sallie Beretta Award, which presented a silver tea service to the top senior woman, and the LBJ Award, which was a $1500 stipend that went to the top male student -- which often helped them start graduate work.  She and other women felt this was absolutely gender discrimination - and they convinced the administration to give the LBJ Award to the top student.  She heard that LBJ was very pleased about this change.

Schwartz talks about many issues she experienced while as a student in the late 1960s and early 1970s, such as Vietnam War protests and marches.  Gaye Granberry and Pat Murdock join in the conversation and reminisce about those years as well.
