Samuel Holmes

Biography

Samuel Holmes (1924–2011) was born and raised in Austin, Texas. He spent his early years working as a paperboy and at a local grocery store. He served in the Army during World War II. Other jobs included working for the Kerrville Bus Company before he began employment at the Driskill Hotel in 1946. There, Holmes worked as an elevator operator, a bellman, and other positions for decades before he left in 1984. He then joined the A-J Leasing Company.

Samuel Holmes talks about growing up in Austin, and the different jobs that he's held, including selling newspapers and working in a grocery store as a child in the 1930s. He also shares memories of working at the Driskill Hotel, a popular political meeting ground in Austin, when Lyndon B. Johnson was president.
