Sammie Hardeman

Biography

Sammie L.C. Hardeman (1915–2003) was born Lockhart, Texas. Hardeman lived in various towns throughout Central Texas before settling in San Marcos in 1929. While attending Dunbar High School, Hardeman learned how to barbeque, a skill that he would use in his work for the remainder of his life. Hardeman worked with the university food service for decades, making barbeque for campus-wide events including Frontier Day. He also worked in restaurants and banquet halls in Austin and in various food companies.

Sammie Hardeman shares his experience in the food service industry and how it led him to his job at the university. He recalls being born in Lockhart and later moving to San Marcos. Hardeman also talks about his barbecuing business, along with the private parties he would put on where he would cook for university presidents. He mentions Dr. Evans, Dr. Flowers, and Dr. McCrocklin.
