Granberry, Gayle

Gayle Shipp Granberry

Biography

A 1967 journalism graduate of Texas State University, Gayle Shipp Granberry scored points with President Johnson when she “ambushed” him for a live interview during her student journalism days. Granberry became the first woman in Texas (and the third in the nation) to be news director of a metropolitan television station when she was named the first news director for what is now KVUE-TV in Austin. She is currently a spokesman for Seton Hospital.

LBJ100 Oral History Project

Gayle Granberry talks about starting a campus radio show as student at Southwest Texas State (SWT) around 1966 and getting the idea to interview President Johnson on the show. She details how she introduced herself to Johnson and shook his hand – only to have two guys (probably Secret Service) grab her. And she talked about how the resulting interview was played in its regular weekend time slot, but clips were picked up by national news stations – and says that was an exciting experience for a college student.
