Wallace Dockall

Biography

Distinguished Alumnus Wallace Dockall (1923-2018) received his bachelor’s degree from SWT in 1948 and his master’s the following year. He taught chemistry and coached football and basketball at San Marcos High School for a few years before moving to Stephen F. Austin High School, eventually serving as Principal at Travis High School in Austin.

He joined the administrative team that oversaw the development and opening of Gary Job Corps in 1965. In 1970, he became CEO of the Texas Educational Foundation which managed the Gary Job Corp Training Center and other centers. Mr. Dockall received the distinguished Texas State Alumni Award in 1982 and retired from the Texas Education Foundation in 1993.

Wallace Dockall talks about how he resigned from his job as principal of Travis High School in Austin to become principle of the Gary Job Corps Center in 1965, and how President Johnson and Governor Connally attended the dedication ceremony for the facility. He talks in detail about starting the educational programs, how allowing women to attend the Center changed the student dynamics, and how students were recruited from all over the country to attend the Center.
