Ira Renay Bowles

Biography

Dr. Ira Renay Bowles (1916–2000), a native of Alpine, Texas, attended Sul Ross State Teachers College before receiving his BA from Westminster College in Princeton, New Jersey. Bowles received his MM and EdD from Columbia University's Teachers College. A renowned baritone soloist, Bowles toured around the United States and Cuba before joining Southwest Texas State Teachers College's music department in 1947. 

Bowles served as the chairman of the college's voice and choral department and later music department. He also directed the college chorus and the acapella choir. He retired from the university in 1986 and was named professor emeritus in 1989.
