Newspaper Grants FY2015

The University Archives at Texas State University has been awarded two grants for digitizing newspapers.

TexTreasures

The first is a TexTreasures grant to digitize approximately 1000 pages of fragile and rare newspapers from San Marcos and Hays County. The project will also include the preservation microfilming of these newspapers. These papers date from the mid-1800s, and are significant because they tell the story of Hays County as it developed from a small agricultural area to a growing center for education and training.

The $1,275 grant was awarded by the Texas State Library and Archives Commission who administers the grant program with funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

Rescuing Texas History

The second is a 2014 Rescuing Texas History grant to digitize 970 pages of the student newspaper, The College Star, dating from 1919 to 1927. The student newspaper began in February 1911 as The Normal Star. Early issues are incomplete and very fragile. The first 8 volumes dating from 1911-1919 have already been digitized in-house, and are available online through the University Libraries Digital Collections.

The $1,000 grant was awarded by The Portal to Texas History at the University of North Texas.

Both grants will fund digitization services provided by The Portal to Texas History. The materials scanned will be hosted on The Portal to Texas History, as well as the University Libraries Digital Collections. The newspapers will make their way to the University of North Texas this November, and both projects have an expected completion date of November 2015.
